Symonds returned to Clifton in 1868 with his wife, Catherine (Janet Catherine North), and two young daughters. While living at Victoria Square, Symonds began to devote himself to writing, as well as lecturing at Clifton College and the Association for the Higher Education of Women. The couple’s time at Victoria Square was marked by an increased openness around Symonds’ same-sex attraction, not without pain for Catherine who was hurt by Symonds’ attachment to Norman Moor.
